Millennial women are using gassing to help support each other at work

Millennial women are using gassing to help support each other at workMillennial women are using gassing to help support each other at workA compliment is defined as a polite expression of praise or admiration. Something like Nice handwriting or Cute haircut would fall under this category. But in this post MeToo era, Millennial women have taken on a new, highly exaggerated as well as highly energized way of psyching each other up when speaking to each other. This form of communication was identified by the cultural surveyors over at Man Repeller as gassing. Writer Emma Bracy defined it as, Hyping. Blatantly bigging up. Telling someone, unprompted, that you appreciated their hustle up those stairs,or that outfit, or the way their edges are laid. Sending text messages out of the blue that say things like, In case no one told you today, youre the sh-t. And that ass? Amazing . If youre looking for mora examples just watch any episode of Broad City.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIts basically taking the animated You go girl of the 90s and boosting it up by about 60 amps. After all, we didnt start answering every affirmative question with a declaration of Yasssss Queen until the last few years. Fun fact the elongated Yasssss actually came from Bali culture as a form of encuragement and then infiltrated into our world of social media when an over-exuberant fan of Lady Gagas (is there any other kind?) met her and, as most of us can relate, could only simply say a long Yasssss in a perfect combination of praise, excitement and just bewildered awe.Gassing at workNow, much of this type of speech is reserved for the comment section of Instagram or when greeting someone at brunch if they are pulling off a hat but should women, especially Millennial and Gen Z women, be using this heightened way of talking in the workplace?Bevin Prince and Brittney Levine, the hosts and founders of theBe My Neighbor podcast, which is aimed at Millennial women, told Ladders they think gassing is absolutely acceptable in the workplace. In our opinion, were elated that the gassing subject is being brought up and even a thing. There is a definitely an overdoing it type of support, but if women genuinely mean it and respond to their female friends/perfect female strangers pictures, posts, achievements, etc. with genuine support, we feel that were all the better for it. It takes a lot for another woman to voice her support, purely because she might have her own insecurities.Elizabeth Tuke (or Tuke as she is fondly known), the CEO and founder of Tuke Consulting (and well-known p.r. genius whose clients include Malone Souliers and LBV and she was Meghan Markles publicist before she became a Princess) told Ladders, Any type of unsolicited ego boost is a means of positive reinforcement and I am a big advocate of it. I have experienced both reserved and conservative colleague s, who withhold encouragement or sharing their excitement for others success. Hyping up, pumping up or boosting the spirit of your peers, colleagues or employees simply infuses energy into the workplace just as it does on a playing field filled with athletes.Good as goldBut why is this dramatic way of speaking so essential right now? First of all, lets look at the psychology of compliments. Unfortunately, even the most confident of humans needs a compliment every once in a while. As Mark Twain said,I can live for two months on a good compliment. A 2012 study actually found that a compliment can help improve performance with a task at the same equivalency as giving someone cash to do the same task.Professor NorihiroSadato, the study lead and professor at theNational Institute for Physiological Sciences inJapan said of the research,To the brain, receiving a compliment is as much a social reward as being rewarded money. Weve been able to find scientific proof that a person performs be tter when they receive a social reward after completing an exercise. Complimenting someone could become an easy and effective strategy to use in the classroom and during rehabilitation. So this over-emphasized use of laudation could be very essential in the workplace. Plus, if work is particularly stressful or, you know, you exist in the world, gassing can be a strategy for survival. Over-the-top support for one another is something that women have used historically in difficult times,Diane Barth, LCSW, told Well and Good. Its one way of counteracting cultural and personal denigration of women t- coming up with superlatives for who women are and what we do. Plus, with Instagram likes possibly becoming an endangered species soon, we are going to need a real-life equivalency as soon as possible.Sara Levine, the Editor in Chief of Betches Media, a millennial media platform, told Ladders, I think gassing or building other women up is only beneficial in the workplace. Complimenting anoth er woman on a job well done is not going to diminish your own career prospects - success is not a zero-sum game. On the contrary, if phrased appropriately for the workplace, gassing can help motivate. And in a society where women are constantly being put down, by men and other women, who better than our peers to help build us up?Blake noted, Tous, wherewerefacedwithbeingtoldNO on adailybasis, whether its in an audition room or board room, having each other as support systems have benefitedusgreatly. I tell Bevin when she looks beautiful andifI think she looks crazy (hard to do), andwecan laugh and joke about it all.Wehave gotten to the point wherewetrust one another and know that evenifweretalking aboutourpersonal achievements its not considered boastingbecausethe support is met on the other side. Perhaps if Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scotts had just spoken to each other in this manner they could have avoided so many conflicts (and a lot of bloodshed.) Mary could have said somet hing about Elizabeths amazing ability to pull off the impossible to pull off Geisha meets Bozo the Clown aesthetic.Go deeperHowever, jokes aside, the gassing does need to be authentic Prince and Blake noted. Now there has been criticism that women focus too much on complimenting each others appearances can have negative effects and though gassing may focus on an aesthetic perhaps at first it goes deeper than that. It is just good old-fashion cheerleading with accentuation. It is as the kids say extra.Kim Palmer, CEO of womens wellness app, Clementine, told EveryWoman, Women really struggle to do their own PR, especially in the workplace, because they dont like to show off. So to have a cheerleader do that for you is amazing. So find a female colleague tell her she is a genius and should rule the world and call it day.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons f rom Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Class of 2010 Law Grads Face Dismal Job Prospects

Class of 2010 Law Grads Face Dismal Job ProspectsClass of 2010 Law Grads Face Dismal Job ProspectsAs if the class of 2010which has been out of law school for about a year nowneeded a reminder of how depressing the legal job market has been, NALP just released its Employment Report and Salary Survey for the Class of 2010. According to NALP,The overall employment satz for new law school graduates is, at 87.6%, the lowest it has been since 1996, when the rate stood at 87.4%. In addition to a lower overall employment rate than that measured for the classes that immediately preceded it, the Class of 2010 employment data reveal a job market with many underlying structural weaknesses, and the employment profile for this class marks the interruption of employment patterns for new law school graduates that have been undisturbed for decades. The employment rate has not been this low for a law school class since 1996. Another apparent trend from the data is that fewer law students are obtaining jobs that require passage of the bar exam NALP found that of those 2010 graduates for whom employment was known, only 68.4% obtained a job for which bar passage is required. This compares with 70.8% for the Class of 2009 and 74.7% for the Class of 2008 and is the lowest percentage NALP has ever measured. An additional 10.7 percent of 2010 law school graduates secured positions that prefer or call for a JD but do not demand bar exam passage this rate is higher than the Class of 2009 rate of 9.2 percent. Finally 8.6 percent of 2010 law grads are employed in other capacities.NALP gathered its data in February 2011approximately nine months subsequent to the graduation dates for most 2010 law school graduatesand based its study on graduates with known statuses, rather than on the total number of graduates. The organization determined that the employment rate for the Class of 2010 based on total number of graduates was 84.1 percent (but NALP also noted that one cannot assume that the un known statuses equate with unemployment).NALP press release ABA Journal sourceRead More Law Grad Sues Law School for Lack of Transparency Unprecedented, Enormous Law School Debt The Future of Legal Education Stop Resisting and Get Creative CONNECT WITH VAULT LAW ON TWITTER VaultLaw

Preparation Requirements for a Human Resources Career

Preparation Requirements for a Human Resources CareerPreparation Requirements for a Human Resources CareerAre you interested in a carer in menschengerecht resources (HR)? HR departments contribute to a companys employee recruitment and selection, employee development, employee retention, organizational culture, and a positive, motivating work environment, which are critical to business success. Companies now seek HRs leadership and guidance. To enter the HR field, you must meet some extremum requirements. Preparing for a Career in Human Resources In smaller companies, one or a few staff members may wear many hats and perform HR generalist work with responsibility for all aspects of menschlich resources. In larger companies, an HR Director or Vice President might head up multiple departments led by managers who specialize in areas such as training and development, compensation and benefits, or labor relations. Because of the variety of positions in the field, you have a great oppo rtunity to find a work setting that suits your skills and strengths, your preference for company size, or your desire to specialize or generalize. To prepare yourself for a successful career in menschlich resources, consider pursuing degrees and qualifications that fit the role. Degrees That Complement a Career in Human Resources The Occupational Outlook Handbook believes that HR career and job opportunities will continue to be most available for people who keep ansicht three key points in mind Educational backgrounds of HR workers vary considerably and reflect the diversity of duties and levels of responsibility. (They are also dependent on where you want to live and work and any competition that may exist in that marketplace.)Certifications and previous experience are assets for most HRspecialtiesand are essential for more advanced positions, including managers, arbitrators, and mediators.Having both a college degree and an earned certification can open the door to the best jo b opportunities. Many colleges and universities have educational programs that lead to degrees in human resources, HR specialties such as training and development, or business. Depending on the school you choose, you will find courses that lead to a career in HR management in departments such as business, education, instructional design or technology, organization development, human services, communication, and public administration. Complementary Coursework for HR Positions People who want to work successfully in Human Resources should take courses in business, social sciences such as psychology and sociology, and finance. The Occupational Outlook Handbook specifically recommends Most prospective human resources specialists should take courses in compensation, recruitment, training and development, and performance appraisal, as well as courses in principles of management, organizational structure, and industrial psychology. Other relevant courses for students who have an inter est in human resources might include business administration, public administration, psychology, sociology, political science, economics, and statistics. The Growing Importance of a Graduate Degree If youre considering a career in human resources, many professionals choose to pursue a Masters degree in human resources, organizational development, business administration (MBA), and other related subjects. Increasingly, you need a Masters degree if you expect to be competitive for the best, most desirable, high-paying HR jobs. Some HR professionals say that the Masters is the new Bachelors degree in the field. Because of the challenge of employment law, more human resources professionals are obtaining law degrees or transferring into HR from the legal profession. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook Many labor relations jobs require graduate study in industrial or labor relations. A strong background in industrial relations and law is highly desirable for contract negoti ators, mediators, and arbitrators in fact, many people in these specialties are lawyers. A background in law also is desirable for employee benefits managers and others who must interpret the growing number of laws and regulations. A masters degree in human resources, labor relations, or in business administration with a concentration in human resources management is highly recommended for those seeking general and top management positions. Top Qualifications for HR Job Candidates While education is important, your other qualification and skills can be equally as important as your coursework and degree. Some of the key skills and personal qualifications you will need to work successfully in human resources include the following. Effective interpersonal skills so you can interact successfully with all employees in the organizationKnowledge of computers and information systems since HRIS has become central in documentation and employee self-service.Effective spoken and written com municationComfort with diverse people with various educational levels, cultural heritage, religious practices, ages, work experience, and opinionsUnderstanding of statistics and financeConflict resolution skills to both initiate and mediate workplace conflicts Ability to set and accomplish goals and work as a member of a teamA high level of integrity, confidentiality, and fairness Entry-Level Job Opportunities and Gaining Experience It is difficult to break into a career in human resources above the entry level. Successive positions at the HR generalist and manager level, or above, require the knowledge and experience obtained in entry-level positions. Occasionally, experienced individuals who have held managerial-type positions in business, government, or the military might be considered for positions above entry level. If you fall into that camp, you might consider obtaining certifications or taking coursework related to your area of interest to further prepare yourself for a career in HR. If youre seeking an entry-level HR position, try to obtain some experience while youre in college as an intern. Even part-time work or an internship in other fields adds to your potential as a candidate. Leadership roles in clubs, volunteer experiences, club or college sports, and real-world projects for a company add to your credibility as a candidate. HR is a rewarding field with many benefits both emotionally and can provide stability and good income. Seek additional information from your college placement offices and counselors or talk with people working in HR where you want to live and work.

Job Interviewers 5 Mistakes to Avoid

Job bewerbungsgesprchers 5 Mistakes to AvoidJob Interviewers 5 Mistakes to AvoidIn the world of recruiting blogs, job search forums, and career blogs, plenty gets said about the best practices for candidates during the all important interview process. Whats less frequently addressed are proper approach for those on the hiring end of the equation. Job interviews are the primary method for evaluating your companys newest employee asset. Setting yourself up for success by conducting the best interview possible can have a huge impact on ensuring you pick the best quality candidate for the job at hand. With that in mind, here are five top mistakes to avoid for any prospective job interviewer.1. Failing to Interview PrepOne of the top pieces of advice for recruits looking to score that next big job role is to prepare, prepare, prepare. File this one into the practice what you preach category. Employers looking to hire top talent should also do their research prior to sitting down at the in terview table to ensure the short amount of time with your chosen candidates is productive and beneficial to the decision making process.Be sure to review resumes and cover letters before the scheduled interview time to avid five minutes of awkward silence as you quickly cram in relevant facts with the interviewee in the room. If your company is working with a recruiter, give the pre-interview questionnaire a once over or ask the hiring professionals honest opinion of the candidate. Each of these steps will allow you to ask better interview questions of the prospective employee and will help avoid the need for repetitive call backs or email follow up with the candidate due to forgotten or overlooked questions.2. Failing to Highlight Company CultureWhile overall experience, salary expectations and education are key qualifications for any job opening, hiring partners that fail to also assess whether an interviewee matches up with a companys core ethics, values and work practices is mi ssing out on a vital piece of data when it comes to individual employability. If your company has strict standards regarding timeliness or values independence and the ability to work on ones own, interviewers should ensure their candidates possess these traits in buchung to avoid employee turnover. In addition, selling your companys positive culture characteristics can help land that exceptional candidate. In todays job market, top talent often holds the bargaining chips and affirmative and positive qualities such as commitment to employee growth or an open feedback policy can tip the scales in your favor. Make a list ahead of time or peruse your company website to nail down the fundamental core values of the workplace and then work them into your introductory interview remarks. 3. Leaving Job Expectations UnclearWhen it comes to interviewer mistakes, perhaps one of the most costly overlooked pieces of information is the key tasks, duties and requirements of the position. Broadly cat egorized as job expectations, failing to convey these critical elements of resposibility can leave fhigkeit candidates in the dark as to their daily duties. This can create confusion in the initial days of employment, a critical time for creating a smooth and seamless onboarding process.Consider bringing the job listing into the interview room and spend some time reviewing it with the candidate, point by point. This is also a great opportunity to nail down how the individual feels theyd perform in each of the job roles, as well as address any strengths or shortcomings based on their prior experience.4. Putting Too Much Stock in Social MediaIn todays increasingly connected and tech savvy society its inevitable that your candidates will have some kind of social media presence. Savvy interviewers know that a few minutes of searching publicly available information on these sites can help identify problem behaviors in candidates and pinpoint potential red flags. Social media research of your candidates, however, can also be a double edged sword. Ruling out an otherwise qualified candidate due to a few pictures of them drinking at a yacht party would be a grave mistake unless supporting evidence during your interview made you believe the individual was less than dedicated and hardworking. In short, use social media to rule out candidates who would be an obvious poor fit with your company or gruppe culture, but dont rush to throw the baby out with the bathwater if they have a preference for sharing silly cat memes.5. Being Overly Aggressive or IntimidatingWe all can appreciate a well crafted interview question that asks prospective candidates to describe their work style or preferred communication method. Attempting to game the system, though, with the use of elaborate problem solving exercises, overly aggressive or direct interviewing styles or otherwise coming on too strong can scare away otherwise qualified potential employees. Avoid taking the why should I give y ou this job approach and instead focus on creating a genuine dialog with the candidate. Talking about ideas and experience in a given field will tell you a lot more than whether the interviewee can make eye contact during a hard line of interrogation, designed to do little more than make candidates squirm. In ConclusionThe bottom line is that interviewees should show the same amount of respect, preparation and importance to the interview process as the individual candidates. Leading by example is a great way to start off any working relationship and setting a professional and thoughtful tone during the interview will go a long way towards communicating those expectations to job seekers. Make the most out of your interviews with productive and well-designed questions and youll end up with better potential candidates and potentially saving your company in terms of reduced employee turnover and more talented hires.

5 Legitimate Ways to Make Money on the Side

5 Legitimate Ways to Make Money on the Side5 Legitimate Ways to Make Money on the SideLets face it- most people wont turn down the opportunity to make a little extra cash on the side. People with a few extra hours to spare a week can stand to make a decent amount of money through side hustles, if they can find the right gig.Luckily were living in a gig society, where freelance, hourly, and part-time work is plentiful. The trick to making the most of a side job is finding something you both enjoy and that stands to be lucrative. Here are a few of the more common legitimate ways to make some money on the side, and what you might be able to make with each one.1. TranscribingMedian wages according to PayScale $15.22/hourJob details If youre a whiz at typing, this side job could be right up your alley. Most jobs these days require a ton of typing, so you may have become proficient in this skill without really even thinking about it. As a professional transcriber, youll be trusted to take au dio files and transcribe them into the written word for companies to use. How much you stand to make will vary based on your skill level and the type of company youre transcribing for, but wages generally start around $15/hour and go up to $25/hour or more.2.ProofreadingMedian wages according to PayScale $17.82/hourJob details Especially if your regular career involves a lot of editing or proofing, picking up some extra work on the side to spend a couple hours a week doing the same for other companies could prove very fruitful. While the median salary for a proofreader starts around $17.82/hour, skilled professionals could get up to $30/hour or more.3.PhotographyMedian wages according to PayScale $16.21/hourJob details The great thing about having a side hustle as a photographer is that the opportunities for taking photos are so plentiful, you dont even necessarily have to do work for a specific company or organization. By just putting the word out there that youll be taking on some photography clients, you might be surprised at the number of friends, family members, and neighbors who jump at the opportunity (assuming you take great photos, of course). Making the most of your side job as a photographer will likely mean having a stellar portfolio to share with potential new clients, though, so if you arent a professional photographer in real life, you might consider at least taking some photography classes and purchasing some good photography and photo editing equipment.4.ConsultingMedian wages according to PayScale Varies by category. For example, information technology consultants can earn an average $36.52/hour, while software developer consultants can make about $37.14/hour.Job details Consulting is such a great potential side gig because this type of job draws on the skills that you already have and are likely proficient at. If you excel at your job- whatever the job may be- there is likely a company out there that would pay you for your time to help consu lt their own employees. That means youll have to put in less potential time with the startup costs of your side hustle, and you may already have some clients built in from your current job contacts.5.Social MediaMedian wages according to PayScale $17.03/hour for social media marketing coordinator positionsJob details In todays social mediaobsessed world, its likely you already have some savvy social media skills up your sleeve, so why not put them to good use making a little extra cash on the side? Big companies are often looking to contract out the work of managing their social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. If you have experience umgang your own personal business accounts or the accounts of your company, tout those skills on social media marketplaces to pick up a couple extra hours of work each week and make some nice cash on the side. For more ideas on good side jobs, check out this piece about 13 ways to make money on the side. Build Your Personal Brand, Get Hired

Build Your Personal Brand, Get Hired Build Your Personal Brand, Get Hired Thanks to technology and social media, the concept has been steadily evolving, and the strategy behind building your brand has changed significantly since its inception. At its fruchtwein basic level, personal branding has become inseparable from your Internet reputation and social media presence. So what does all this mean for job seekers? Making your name stand out amongst the faceless masses seems like an incredibly daunting marketing task for the average person. Looking for employment is a full time job, and most job seekers dont have the time to spend all day on Twitter and LinkedIn spreading their influence (or building it from scratch the minute they need a new job.)But job seekers dont need to fully immerse themselves in the craft of personal brand building to reap some of its most important benefits. With few simple, easy steps, job seekers can gain creditability and increase their overall exposure to recruiters and hiring managers leading to more job opportunities. Try these steps as part of your job hunting strategyGet your name out there Its likely you already have a Facebook, LinkedIn, or Google+ account. If so, youre already on your way to establishing a strong Internet presence. Make sure you set at least one of these social channels as public to increase your visibility to recruiters and employers. You want to be found as easily as possible within the top ten results of a Google search is desirable. Having a blog or an online portfolio of work will also help you stand out. Use very descriptive words to describe what you do your skills and accomplishments.Build up a reputationWhen you apply for jobs, its very likely that youll be screened based on your web presence. The first thing an employer will do is check your credentials and information online. Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for unsavory information reasons not to hire you. Take advantage of this fact by filling the Internet with positive examples of yourself.
